Business Needs
Established in Hong Kong in 1964, Qualidux Industrial Company Limited (Qualidux) is a leading manufacturer of plastic toys and household goods in Asia. With a total workforce of several thousands, the company is headquartered in Hong Kong and has production facilities in Mainland China.

"The toy manufacturing industry has changed a lot since Qualidux was first founded," says W. Bernie Ting, Director and General Manager, Qualidux Industrial Co. Ltd. "Size is no longer as important a competitive advantage as professionalism, productivity and the efficiency of internal processes."

In particular, companies in the industry are challenged to meet a myriad of complex and ever-changing safety and quality regulations, such as the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive and the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). "In recent years, oversight of the toy production industry has become increasingly strict," says Ting. "Our materials and products need to undergo numerous tests – possibly as many as the food and pharmaceutical industries -- to meet both local and international standards. Ensuring compliance and strict material control is now mission-critical for us."

Previously, Qualidux had been using Business Planning and Control System (BPCS) on AS/400, running on IBM DB2 database, as their Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.

By 2008, it became more apparent to Qualidux that their ERP system was inadequate in helping them navigate the complexities of the international regulatory environment while maintaining a high level of productivity. "The [previous] system made it difficult to extract data," says Ting. "Information was dispersed across different sources and this was preventing our various departments from collaborating effectively. There was also a lack of customization, which hampered our ability to grow. And when there were technical problems, it was not easy to get support."

The time had come to find a new ERP system that could meet the changing needs of the company.

"[In 2008] we were in the market for a new ERP solution," says Ting. "We wanted a system that gave a great user experience, had a strong database structure, was easy to deploy and upgrade, and that was backed up by solid support."

In 2009, after comparing several products, Qualidux chose Microsoft® Dynamics™ AX.

Increased adaptability and scalability; "Dynamics has a superior data structure," says Ting. "It is highly-customizable, which is essential in an industry that is facing constant change. Different teams can focus on their own processes without having to worry about the overall integrity of the data. This gives us more adaptability and scalability."

Improved productivity and efficiency; by deploying Dynamics AX, Qualidux was able to immediately expand its ERP capabilities to more users. They started off with more than 90 employees on the system and intend to increase that by 5-10% in 2010. Ting credits the system’s usability with boosting productivity: "There has been a marked improvement in the ability of our quality experts to collect test report data for compliance purposes," he says. "Most important, previously, different departments used different ERP terms, which made it difficult to match data and reports; but now, all our departments are now speaking the same language. The result is that we are now much better at solving problems. Ultimately, this makes us more productive, efficient and competitive."

Better integration and clear growth path; Qualidux are also impressed with the high level of integration between Dynamics and their other IT investments. "We are currently looking into enhancing integration between our ERP system and [Microsoft] Exchange to enable e-mail notifications," says Ting.

Another key attraction is the ability to upgrade easily. "This industry is in a state of constant change and to survive you have to keep thinking about long-term solutions to existing and emerging challenges," says Ting. "Dynamics has a very clear system upgrade path and is relatively easy to enhance and improve on as needed. This gives us a much-welcome sense of security and confidence."
